Redbull May Prevent Alzheimer’s

Scientists have discovered that a chemical very similar to Taurine, an amino acid found in Red Bull Energy drink, cleared amyloid plaques from the brains of mice with Alzheimers-like symptoms, restoring their cognitive function to normal.

The work is still in its infancy, however it raises hopes for the development of drugs that can prevent the accumulation of amyloid plaques and slowdown or stop the progression of the disease. Amyloid plaques are one of the first tell-tail signs of Alzheimer’s and are thought to contribute to the degeneration of neurons by killing off brain cells.

Researchers in Korea discovered chemical, 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1- piperazinepropanesulphonic acid or EPPS. In the preliminary study they found that mice showed improved performance on maze test and that it seemed to clear amyloid plaques from the brains of the mice. The chemical also did not seem to pose any health risks, even at high doses.

Taurine can be found in nature such as in oysters where 100 grams may contain up to 1200 miligrams. If oysters are not your thing, one 8.3 ounce can of Redbull has 1000mg of taurine!
